While working as a student intern at Cal State Fullerton’s Studio 495, the Asian American Pacific Resource Center (APARC) placed an open call for design submissions for their annual graduation ceremony to commemorate student graduates of Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi American descent (APIDA Grad). The Center requested designs celebrating Asian cultures and communities across the global spectrum, specifically asking to highlight the color green—a unique hue that holds significant reverence across the board throughout East Asian, South Asian, and Desi cultures alike. Following this request, I utilized a rich color palette of cool jades and deep emeralds and incorporated shades of similarly multiculturally-symbolic reds and crimsons as accent colors for additional details. I also selected a distinctly stylized, yet culturally ambiguous font for the main title treatment for this pan-Asian assignment, along with a complementary unique serif font for secondary content. Finally, to further highlight these distinctly individual, yet united cultures, I designed geometric patterns and frames inspired by the architecture and graphic shapes of various temples, churches, and mosques of the region, and created custom vector butterfly and floral illustrations to evoke the natural imagery depicted in textiles and landscapes prevalent in traditional Asian art styles and geographic locations. Collateral for this campaign included printed and digital promotional event posters and front and back program pamphlets for the 2018 ceremony.
